    when good food does bad

sausageOh, Trader Joe’s, how could you?

I cannot come up with any combination of ingredients that would justify that sad little comma.

P.S. I typically do not like apple sausages (something about combining organ meats and fruit…ick) but I had to buy it for the blog…and I didn’t think they would appreciate if I removed the cardboard label and put it back on the shelf.

P.P.S. Yes, I am grocery shopping for the blog.

I think Trader Joe’s needs to read THIS.

Introduction to the new category: WORDS

It seems like we should have thought of this category from the very beginning, seeing as how we both love words so much. It also seemed appropriate to give this category its own special introduction…but once I created the draft, I was drawing a complete blank as to how to introduce the WORDS. So, instead, here is a list of some of the wonderful things we will put into this category!

Yeah, good intro! btw, chicken is also called poultry. Thanks for the military alphabet! I’ve always wanted to know that. I’m going to commit it to memory so I can keep up with you and your developing military knowledge. Should I learn Morse code? It would come in handy and would also help me in developing my hermetic tendencies.

I was tempted to remove my Important question about words because (besides being not that important) I’ve now been corrected on it twice. But then I realized – wait, stop the presses! That is exactly why you pose a question in the first place! Bravo Carmen and Dad! So, it can stay. But…poultry, like fowl, is a word generally used for live chickens, like a poultry farmer; one usually does not look at a platter of food and say “that is some delectable poultry” the way one would say “great steak” or “tender veal.” So I still think there needs to be another word for the chicken we eat. (ug. But don’t google poultry because you will get all kinds of horrifying images and descriptions on commercial poultry farms which result in the overwhelming urge to go picket a KFC.)

Yeah, I’ve always wanted to know the military alphabet, too – nothing like making it mandatory to inspire my learning! I am not sure if they still use morse code, although I don’t see why not, so let’s learn it!

I love words. I like playing with them. Words are clean. They soar in the serene supernal. I can take them out and look at them, they fit into books, they lead me down that narrow way. And in the morning they are there. Words are straight. But the world is round and a messy mortal is my friend.

I found that somewhere in a book of poems when I was about 30 years old. I’m older now. Words are still straight but I took care of the messy mortal.

He is no longer my friend.

I didn’t write down the poets name.

Nice poem! I had to look up supernal – great new word!

      1. being in or belonging to the heaven of divine beings; heavenly, celestial, or divine.
      2. lofty; of more than earthly or human excellence, powers, etc.
      3. being on high or in the sky or visible heavens.

      I added the morse code!

“you’re irreplaceable” is a nice compliment, but not to be taken literally

I spent the morning reviewing résumés for the Controller position I will soon be vacating. The job has been on Craig’s List for just over a week, and there are 114 applications so far – from ex-CFO/CEOs, VPs of Finance, stock analysts and day traders, investment bankers, Ivy league and MBA graduates, mortgage brokers, entrepreneurs, a truckload of real estate agents, and one earth-mover.

    • Carmen 10:55 pm on October 8, 2009 Permalink

Wow. I’m familiar with this uncomfortable position and mainly I find it pretty entertaining. I don’t have the same kind of dedication as you do and also realized the limitations that were already in place – like, yeah right, good luck trying to find someone better than you at doing your job. Its pretty much impossible. Sorry to burst your bubble on that.
What I am most intrigued by is this use of punctuation/
Whats that about? I have not gotten the memo that a backslash is now a period. Is that a secret code for something? Hold on, let me google it….
Ok, I think its some sort of programming thing, I found this:
“it has an easy mnuemonic: If a back slash means concatenate the next line onto this one then forward slash means force the line break here.”
And I’m assuming you are wondering what concatenate means:
without getting all complicated, it means “linked together”. So I think what these nerds are trying to tell you is that they are wicked smahhht. Too smart for their own good. When you tell them that they didn’t get the position (or even an interview) tell them to use a period next time.

    Some new favorite words…

In honor of our new category of words or language or whatever we were going to call it I thought I would let you know of a couple new words that I’ve learned and I’m going to try and incorporate them into my everyday speech.  Ready? Ok, First (and we can thank Max for telling me about these words) Mise en Place. Literally “putting in place” or “things in their place”.  Its used in professional kitchens usually but it can be used anywhere!  I’m using it while organizing random boxes, while doing laundry, and while driving and getting hit by a drunk driver! That guy was definitely not in his right place! Don’t worry, everything is ok except for my side mirror, which is also not mise en place.

Ok, second, QA.  I know, its not exactly a word but it stands for Quality Assurance.  I’m sure you could have guessed that.  Some background – “Two key principles characterise QA: “fit for purpose” (the product should be suitable for the intended purpose) and “right first time” (mistakes should be eliminated).”  Its definitely a foreign concept for me to do something right the first time.  I’m more of a trial and error kind of girl.  But I’m trying to change, really! I think I like it because it sounds like good slang too. Like, here are a couple examples where you could use it:

    1) “I’ll be ready in a minute! I have to QA my face!”

    2) “This customer service sucks, we need to QA right on outta here.”

I think the punctilious authorities might have a problem with me using it this way but luckily they don’t know where I live.  Speaking of punctilious – another of my new favorite words!  I learned it from reading this fabulous article which I’m sure you will find equally interesting considering your logophile tendencies.

This is a great post; it is exactly what I envisioned our WORDS category posts to encompass. This weekend I plan on finishing the intro to the WORDS category…and working on our About Us pages, of course!

    • Carmen 12:12 pm on October 6, 2009 Permalink

Well, this post could be the intro…. that would free up some of your time to work on other things.

    • Carmen 12:12 pm on October 6, 2009 Permalink

      Wait, were you being sarcastic?

    • Emilily 12:18 pm on October 6, 2009 Permalink

No, I wasn’t being sarcastic – this is exactly what I thought our word posts would be like. I am not exactly sure how I envisioned the word post intro going, but I had thought of doing the post in illustrator and using some different fonts and laying it out all poster-y, and then, if it is possible, making that post “sticky” to that category, so it always came up on top but only in that category…not sure how that would work exactly…

    • Emilily 1:32 pm on October 6, 2009 Permalink

Oh wait, maybe you thought I was being sarcastic about working on the About Us pages this weekend? Yeah, you’re right, I wasn’t really committing to that. (Just kidding, I am totally looking forward to blog work this weekend!)

    My Sunday Project fail

So, in my quest to post something creative involving the word “infantile” I just kept thinking of my daily bike rides where I spend the entire time contemplating the universe and why we are all here and what does it all mean man???  When I first saw the word infantile of course I think of babies. Naturally, the question that arises when thinking of babies is where do they come from?  Not like birds and the bees kind of thing but like only 9 months before they were in the world they didn’t exist or were microscopic.  That just amazes me everytime I think about it. So I think about it alot.  And I think about the universe and how I am more than microscopic to the celestial bodies out there in space.  I mean, there are black holes that are 6 billion times larger than our sun – I can’t even fathom the size of it.  So I spend my time imagining that all this space that we are floating in and all this mysterious dark matter that surrounds us is part of a larger organism that we are too small to fathom, imagine or even adequately envision.  Our DNA holds a vast universe of information that we have only begun to uncover and we have only begun to witness events happening in deep space.  So from where we stand infinity reaches in both directions, in terms of size, infinitely large, infinitely small.  In our ever broadening awareness of our world lies our understanding of ourselves and our appropriate place in the scheme of things.  I’m sure you can see now why I wasn’t able to post something in regards to “infantile” on Sunday if this is what happens!

I added my conclusion to the Sunday project. Check it out. I have NO idea why it has a vertical scroll bar now!

    Sunday Project

I got a late start today.  However, as Max is making some Sunday pancakes I took the following historical photographs.  And thus It begins….

"Sloppy Thinking Gets Worse Over Time"

"Sloppy Thinking Gets Worse Over Time"

Our project for today..... (honestly, this is the word I pointed to!)

Yummmmm, Sunday pancakes. real maple syrup? Wish I was there!

That is a very odd word to randomly pick. Very freudian.

      Lovely dictionary.
