    Blogging from the phone

This is an experiment to see if posting from my phone will work. I am at the doctor’s office with my dad, hanging out in the waiting room.

Okay, well, problem #1, there is no page scrolling on the screen. So you type a few lines, then everything you are typing goes down below the screen and you can’t see it. You can still type, but it is invisible, forcing you to blindly trust the apple spell checker, which often likes to replace what I have typed with phrases like “what the duck.”

I think my dad is coming out now. I’ll upload a quick pic!

p.s. I saw you started a post on shoes. You should definitely finish it, since I am like a 7-month fashion time warp and have no idea what shoes I need to buy with this wad of cash burning a hole in my pocket!

    blog business

I just noticed the time on my post last night was not adjusted for stupid daylight savings time. It was not 12:15 am, it was 11:15 pm. I’ve just changed our settings to reflect this. Obviously, WordPress agrees with me in that daylight savings is nothing but a useless annoyance.

    picture template

new orleans project testSo here’s another picture template I made! It is a lot less complicated than the last one, but I think will still work for short projects, and also is a nice way to post three images and a little type. Plus, it can be vertical or horizontal!

Just to see how it looked online, I’ve posted my last three pictures from New Orleans. This is the Mississippi River from Jackson Square. I am not sure what that is across the water, probably just more Louisiana?

I am not sure if you can tell, but along the bottom of the template I drew some graph paper. I might have to make it larger or darker for it to really show up…I guess if you just wanted to show three images, you could use the template at full size (this is medium size) and then the graph paper would show. It occurred to me that with the orange type in the banner, the graph paper, and the clean orderly arrangements of everything in P2, we have a sort of Rhodia notebook theme going on!

Let me warn you now…this might get long. But I promise it will eventually come back around and explain the title.

Ah thats a beautiful vision, i love it. Hopefully someone is already working on this but if not, I’m sure you could get some funding and only work on that for the rest of your life (because it really would take that long). You’d be famous forever if you really did that. They’d call it the Hawkins Romance Dictionary. And in the last minute that you finished it, you are 99 years old and can barely see, you write the last word on the last page… and then a computer program is invented that completes it in a minute – Oh! man! Thats just like those old Twilight Zones.

No seriously, I think instead of writing the dictionary you write a fiction novel about a girl who writes this dictionary – just think of it! it could have love and loss and intrigue and spies and best of all a bizarre and encompassing love of words that brings the greatest of heights and the greatest of tragedies with it. Oh geez, it practically writes itself. You better get on it.

The embosser has arrived! I tried it on the thinner card stock, and it worked really well.

    • Emilily 2:09 pm on September 7, 2009 Permalink

I can’t believe the embosser is not here yet, either! How are you coming along with the business card stamping?

    • Stella 9:31 am on September 8, 2009 Permalink

Watching the banner develop has been interesting. It gets better and better. I know I don’t have an artist’s eye, but something has been bothering me a bit. It’s the right corner: why palm trees and a sailboat? You’ve already imprinted CALIFORNIA with the bridge. Do one of you have a real thing for sailing, or palms? Instead of palms, how about that giant tree in S.B., the ficus? Or eucalyptus, like the ones on my 101 corridor ?

    • Carmen 9:57 am on September 8, 2009 Permalink

Hey Stella! I think Emily is going for the look of Santa Barbara with palms and the sailboat and the bridge is for San Francisco (where I live). Its still a work in progress and I thank you for the suggestions!

    • Emilily 10:19 am on September 8, 2009 Permalink

Yeah, I was going for SF and SB stereotypes, although I have considered cropping out the sailboat because it does not have any real significance, the way the bike does. The palm trees remind me of the ones that line my running path at the beach, although to most people, they will imply Southern California in general, not specifically SB (also, they are the easiest to draw in silhouette!) I think in the next “final” version, the people will be farther apart, the sail boat will be cropped off, and I’ll update the tagline. Open to any suggestions on the colors, also…I thought about going with a blue to match the link color, although orange is a nice complement.

p.s. Carmen, do you know the pixel-width of the space at the top the banner will fill?

p.p.s. I am already half-way done with another, completely different version of the banner that does incorporate some of the 101 corridor, since Humboldt county is a formative piece of our history!

    One more version

I wanted to work on this one a little more before I move on to another approach. What do you think? I am going for something cleaner now, trying to match our theme/style/aesthetic a little better.

    The Banner…in progress

Here is where I am with our custom banner.

Here is where I am with our custom banner. (Ignore that weird blue tinge, I think I bumped up the contrast without paying attention to the entire right side of the image. In the final version, you will not be riding into a blue haze, and the lines will be darker and easier to see.)

So here is the banner so far. I do not know anything about CSS, but my hope is that it is like a template, and there will be some sort of placeholder for our banner, so that, once the style sheet is in place, either one of us will be able to update the banner picture when needed, as long as we keep the same dimensions. Maybe if you haven’t had your appointment with Max yet, you can add this to the agenda?

    • Carmen 7:19 pm on August 2, 2009 Permalink

Basically, I totally love all of this. I love it all. I say go ahead and do the GG bridge! i love cliche! I really like the idea of keeping it clean and simple with the nice pencil lines. I think the color on our blog should come from the photos we post. Then we don’t have to worry about it getting too busy. i mean, your drawings are lovely, they are exactly what I would have envisioned. I also love the idea of a banner gallery, how perfect! hey, maybe you could have my arm going above my head with my fingers all splayed out, that would be cool, and kind of weird. Thats how i wave in real life, all spastic like. not really. i don’t really wave like that.

    • Emilily 7:20 pm on August 2, 2009 Permalink

be careful, i could make it all spastic and then you’d be stuck with it :) I did consider making you wear your helmet…

Second test of the mini-project template

    Sock Curls

Well, here’s the second round of the 3-step project template. I think the size of the overall image, and the font in the text boxes are both about right – would you agree? I’ll email it to you right now as a psd file. The layers are named things like “Type here” and “drop image here” so hopefully it is not too complicated? You can call me and we can go through it together. Once you use it the first time, it’s really easy to just drop pictures in, flatten it, and then upload it!

Now that I’m looking at it, if I fix it so you can delete the Step One, Step Two, etc captions in each text box, this would be a great way to present a simple recipe and three pictures, too.

    • Carmen 1:17 am on August 2, 2009 Permalink

This is a really good idea – everything in the world can be explained in 3 easy steps. Step 1 = be born, Step 2 = live your life, Step 3 = die. Is that morbid? Ah, anyways, i really like this, can’t wait to use it tonight when i make a cocktail with three ingredients: 1 = alcohol, 2 = alcohol, 3 = love.

    • Emilily 10:24 am on August 2, 2009 Permalink

No, it’s not morbid, but I feel it’s worth noting that you really have no control over steps 1 and 3 in this case, so it doesn’t even make for that great of a project. As far as projects go, a recipe for oatmeal might be more interesting than the life of your average human being…

What kind of cocktail did you guys make?

Whoa! Your post just magically appeared while I was typing!

Just a little note on the progress of the banner…do not google “girls on bikes.” Now I feel very very dirty.

    Links

Okay, there are two ways to do it. One, edit the html and add the “target” code, in this case, open the link in a new window is Target equals “_blank”. I used this method on the link from yesterday’s post to Garance’s blog, and it worked. I attempted to use it on the link I put to the Olay vs Creme de la Mer blog, and it did not work, because that link kept adding a rel equals “nofollow” tag, which I have no idea what that means, but I am guessing it has something to do with her particular blog settings forcing us to navigate away from our own page. Way to pee in our cornflakes, other blog lady.

The other way is probably easier. When you are posting, simply highlight the phrase you want to use as a link, and then the LINK button in the posting panel becomes active, and it brings up that dialogue box you mentioned, and then you can set the target to open in a new page, like this.

    Sunday Time

So…are we going to plan a project for this Sunday?

I just discovered something new! Check out what the Add More Tag did to the long chat post we added yesterday! (These new discoveries may not be as exciting to you, since you’ve been doing this for awhile, but I am having fun learning how to blog!)

    New way to post!

I copied the instant message content into Word, then did the find & Replace, and then posted it directly from Word, and it kept all the formatting! Awesome! All you do is,  instead of Save As, you Publish.  Pretty nifty feature.

    Template test

So I made a simple photoshop template to use for three-step projects. Not sure how much we would use it, but the benefits are 1) easy to drop images into and add three brief steps, 2) consistent look and 3) we only have one image added to our media file rather than three, using less of our storage space and delaying the day when we have to buy an upgrade. I’m still testing the appearance of the template, so this is a work in progress.

    This is the project template

    This is the project template

Well, the first time it was too large, and now I think it is too small…have to find the optimum size, but my laptop battery is about to diiiieeeeee

    To be continued…

    The Blog Project: day 6

Well, we’ve come a long way.

    Categories
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’ve been obsessively categorizing and re-categorizing, and I think I like where it is going – what about you? For our main categories, we have: MAKE (projects), SEE (movies, books, art, websites), TALK (general life stuff), EAT (yum yum) and WEAR (clothes, jeweltry, products, etc.) I chose those because they are 1) descriptive and 2) all the words have almost the same aesthetic weight – 3 to 4 letters, all caps – so their relative size as they appear in the Category Cloud is consistent. Within these categories, we have sub-categories, like within MAKE, we have categories for egg projects and sewing projects, and within the SEE category we have categories for art and movies. How does this work for you?

I also added a category under MAKE for The Blog Project :)

    Themes
I like this theme a lot, but I read that in order to have a custom banner, we had to use a CSS style sheet, and that was only compatible with certain themes, this not being one of them. Do you know anything about CSS? Perhaps Max does? I need to draw something for it first, but I was just wondering what we would do with it then. I also wonder if there is any way we could get our categories listed at the top, the way Kristopher Dukes does? It is a nice way to organize the site.

OK! I’m liking this theme! Emile, what do you think? We can add some of your cool drawings in the background with Max’s help.

This is a good way to spend a Saturday…
