    New Orleans, part 1

Parasol's Bar, on the corner of 2nd and Constance streets

Parasol's Bar, on the corner of 2nd and Constance streets

    green bathroom 01

Where is a chainsaw when you really need one? I had to use my glasses as a prop instead.

Since we have some food-themed posts going on, I thought I’d post some New Orleans pics and make a few comments on the food! The bar above, Parasol’s, was my first New Orleans meal. Before you ask if I was trying to get mugged or contract some sort of food-borne illness, I should point out that Parasol’s has been featured on that show, Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and beat Bobby Flay in a Roast Beef Po’Boy throw-down. We ordered their famous roast beef po’boy, an oyster po’boy, and a side of fries smothered in brown gravy. I thought the oysters in one sandwich were good, but I am in general not a fan of soggy food. The roast beef was prepared in the traditional New Orleans style, shredded and soaked in gravy, then sandwiched between crusty french bread, slathered in mayonnaise, and topped with pickles. Although I am sure it is a fine specimen of a po’boy, it was a little too sloppy for me. That, and mayo makes me want to hurl.

They do get points on atmosphere, though! The picture at left is the lone bathroom in the joint…I had to go back in with my camera to capture the utter creepiness; I believe this shade of chartreuse is called Grisly Massacre. Also, if you look closely, you’ll notice that the walls are not proper walls, but painted, unprimed, plywood. The sink was cracked, the ceiling sported one bare strip of constantly-flickering flouresecent bulbs, and the light swtich (top right in picture) had no plate cover. Not like it makes any difference, once you’ve committed to this color, the only thing you can really accessorize with is splattered blood and carnage.

Frankly I’m surprised you made it through the front door! The whole place looks like a horror movie waiting to happen. Turns out it was just a horror movie starring your arteries. (high five!)

dear emily, thank you for putting up with my obsession for deep-fried, mayo-slathered, wrapped-in-bread food. I hope my counter obsession for spinach salad balanced the greasy, make-ya-wanna-hurl path I led you down for a good part of our trip. love, mia

“…some fava beans and a nice chianti.”

Cooking question for you: I bought some fresh fava beans at the market today. I thought I could just boil them like lima beans, but they have this tough shell sort of thing around the pod. What am I supposed to do with this…do I peel them? It is rare that a vegetable stumps me so.

p.s. I did try googling fava beans, and all I got back was a bunch of Hannibal Lecter references.

    • Carmen 8:33 pm on September 12, 2009 Permalink

yes, you get the bean out of the shell, well first you take it out of the pod and then out of the shell. Just clip an end with your thumb fingernail and pop it out (very satisfying). Thats the good part, taking care not to cook too long or they will be kind of powdery consistency. My favorite dish with fava beans is very simple – just the beans, julienned jicama, cilantro, mixed with lime juice, olive oil, salt and pepper. Its pretty flippin delicious. And you can always put some slices of tangerine in there too. A very summery dish. Good luck!

    • Carmen 8:38 am on September 13, 2009 Permalink

Its really good with apples too (instead of jicama).

    • Ma 2:07 pm on September 13, 2009 Permalink

Really girls? A summery dish after Labor Day? What would Ann Landers say about that?

    • Carmen 12:18 pm on September 14, 2009 Permalink

I know, we’re so uncouth. But I’m curious now – how did it turn out Em?

    • Emilily 1:19 pm on September 14, 2009 Permalink

It was good! I do think I over-cooked the fava beans, though, since I cooked them in the shell and boiled them a little longer than necessary, thinking the shell might soften. But the flavor was really nice, I will probably try again next week!

It is hard for me to transition into a fall menu when it is in the mid-80′s all day. Summer produce, like snap peas and strawberries, are still in season at our farmers’ market!

    an observation

Did you ever look in the fridge and just think “maybe it is time for me to stop buying cheese…”?

    • Ashley 3:43 pm on September 12, 2009 Permalink

Yea I thought that just the other day and shortly thereafter dad found my cheese, cut off the mold and ate it on a portabello.

    • Carmen 5:23 pm on September 12, 2009 Permalink

I usually think I should stop buying bread and cilantro. I should definitely buy MORE cheese!

yeah, I’m not messin’ around, either – there’s a truffled gouda, mozzarella filled with mascarpone and curds, midnight moon, buffalo mozzarella, saint andre…

Thanks for the fava bean tips! I’m going to try a variation of that salad with apples instead of jicama (cause that’s what I have in my fridge.)

    Bunny Condiminium…

So, this is pretty much what I did all weekend – construction of a high-rise bunny tower. Not sure what to call it yet – bundiminium? buntowers? bun housing complex? I don’t know, let me know if you think of something good.  Anyways, its taken alot of planning and many trips to Home Depot.  And finally we have it up, not quite finished because I still have to install the tile floors!  For your viewing pleasure… the ongoing project….

    The final installation!    Bunny approved!

It has four levels, each bunny (or pair of buns) gets their own level and they’ll be able to view their kingdom out of the window all day.  Pretty sweet!

I can’t believe the embosser is not here yet, either! How are you coming along with the business card stamping?

    • Stella 9:31 am on September 8, 2009 Permalink

Watching the banner develop has been interesting. It gets better and better. I know I don’t have an artist’s eye, but something has been bothering me a bit. It’s the right corner: why palm trees and a sailboat? You’ve already imprinted CALIFORNIA with the bridge. Do one of you have a real thing for sailing, or palms? Instead of palms, how about that giant tree in S.B., the ficus? Or eucalyptus, like the ones on my 101 corridor ?

    • Carmen 9:57 am on September 8, 2009 Permalink

Hey Stella! I think Emily is going for the look of Santa Barbara with palms and the sailboat and the bridge is for San Francisco (where I live). Its still a work in progress and I thank you for the suggestions!

    • Emilily 10:19 am on September 8, 2009 Permalink

Yeah, I was going for SF and SB stereotypes, although I have considered cropping out the sailboat because it does not have any real significance, the way the bike does. The palm trees remind me of the ones that line my running path at the beach, although to most people, they will imply Southern California in general, not specifically SB (also, they are the easiest to draw in silhouette!) I think in the next “final” version, the people will be farther apart, the sail boat will be cropped off, and I’ll update the tagline. Open to any suggestions on the colors, also…I thought about going with a blue to match the link color, although orange is a nice complement.

p.s. Carmen, do you know the pixel-width of the space at the top the banner will fill?

p.p.s. I am already half-way done with another, completely different version of the banner that does incorporate some of the 101 corridor, since Humboldt county is a formative piece of our history!

Tonight…. a good ending to a somewhat crappy day

So, after a busy day at the office – while the sun is shining outside and I can hear all those damn tourists having such a grand time, all the while I’m looking forward to riding my bike home, dreaming of enjoying the waning sun on my 40 minute ride home – I go say hello to my bike and find a flat tire. Damn.  A bit disappointing.  I really can’t be too upset though.  I live in such a great place that even if my ride home gets a flat I can hop on a train that will get me home in 10 minutes and a nice boyfriend to pick me up at the train station. C’est la vie.  And then I saw this!

view out of my living room window - nice!

View out of my living room window - nice!

So then, obviously, it was time for a lovely cocktail…

I chose "The Boulevardier". It was invented in 1927.

    Delicious!

    Delicious!

Max made a really good dinner of sausages, turnips and carrots.  And now I’ve decided that this has been the best day ever.  Wish you were here!

    • Emilily 10:46 am on August 13, 2009 Permalink

Well, it certainly sounds like your day redeemed itself! That picture out your window is stunning; I can’t wait to see your place. We’re going to hang out in the firehouse and drink old-timey cocktails and make our business cards – it will be marvelous.

My day yesterday was frustrating: I got very little work done (I think you know why) and now have looming deadlines to deal with today, and then after work I scheduled a massage, and it was horrible. I think I am not really a massage person in the first place, but I got talked into one of those Massage Envy year-long memberships where they charge you $59 each month (automatically) and for that you get one “free” massage (see, you pay $59 each month, so this is not really “free” they just call it that) plus all additional massages are $39. Which is a good price for a massage, provided it is a good massage, and you are the type of person who can fit two or more massages a month into their schedule. Anyways, my first three massages (I’ve had this membership for 11 months, and managed only three massages so far) were great, and (and this is important) the masseuse was hot – tall, well-built, maybe 25 years old, some sort of new-agey-type tattoos. Plus, his manner was very nice, soft-spoken and relaxing. But last night was another story! The dude was about 65 years old and had this giant gut, and every time he leaned over my back, his gut would smash against my arm. His massage had no flow to it, and he kept doing this weird digging under my shoulder blade thing, and at the end, he sort of shampooed my hair and scalp with massage oil…yeah, that bad, I almost got up and left. I feel like I need a massage to correct my massage. I guess I should have seen this coming when the week started out with an eye infection and a face rash. Sheesh. In conclusion, I wouldn’t recommend Massage Envy – I do like the occasional massage, but I like my $59 bucks more. Also in conclusion, today darn well better be an improvement over Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

I meant to post this Saturday, but did not have time. Look at these beautiful tomatoes I got from the farmer’s market! They are so sweet, and the outside is firm and crunchy. Sunday Project: Croque Madame…

I decided to try this recipe this morning.  Here’s how it went:

    first-templatetemplate-2

The conslusion is that it tasted pretty darn good!

    • Emilily 12:53 pm on August 10, 2009 Permalink

That looks tasty! You really can’t go wrong with grilled cheese.

For my Sunday project, here is a random fact about the croque madame, and my own weekend baking project.

The name of your yummy breakfast is from the french verb croquer, or to crunch. It is a good thing the sandwich is french, because croque monsieur and croque madame both sound far more appetizing than mr. and mrs. crunch. Also, in what seems like an unexpected move from the french, among the many variations they have on the sandwich is the croque McDo, which, as you guessed, is the McDonald’s version. Ug.

I was at my grandma’s this weekend, and used the opportunity to bake in a real oven! It was my second attempt at the Arcata Co-op’s Atomic Bran Muffin recipe. Ashley got the recipe for me last Christmas, and the first time I made it, it turned out good, but not exactly like I was expecting. I tried it again, following the recipe to the letter, and again ended up with a really good bran muffin, but not the Atomic bran muffin. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that they have a real baker’s oven? Or, as I suspect, there is some secret ingredient that was left out of my copy of the recipe!

      bran muffin

And look! I added a picture to a reply!!!
Also, why is your post marked “sticky”? What does that mean?

    • Emilily 1:07 pm on August 10, 2009 Permalink

And I love your use of the project template! What did you think of it? I hope it was okay to work with! Maybe I can make a version that has 6 squares all lined up so you don’t have that alignment problem with the two images….

Third (and final) test of the mini-project template

This is a little story about some scallops I made this week.

All ingredients were from Trader Joe’s unless specified otherwise: Wild Japanese scallops ($9.99 per bag), Giant New England scallops ($10.99 per bag), unsalted butter, Olive Oil in a spray can, and Lawry’s seasoning salt.

The scallops were frozen to start with. To defrost, I left them on the counter sandwiched between paper towels and pressed under a cooling rack with a half-empty wine bottle on top, for about 3 hours, with the wine bottle getting progressively lighter. Never-been-frozen scallops would have been better, of course, but the giant bay scallops at the two local fish counters are between $18.95 and $24.99 per pound, which is a bit rich for me at the moment. Especially for an experiment.

(In the images below, the Japanese scallops are always on the left, the New England on the right.)

    Scallops!

My final conclusion was that the Japanese scallops had chewier texture and slightly sweeter taste in all cooking methods, but had a tendency to fall apart or flatten, and carmelized very quickly. The New England scallops were a close second in taste, but consistently meatier, held their shape very well, developed a nice golden color, and would work well for dishes where the savory element was dominant.

On a related note, I prefer large scallops to smaller ones because my dad told me once when we were kids, eating plain microwaved scallops for breakfast, that sometimes supermarkets substitute cow ankle tendons for scallops because the appearance and texture are nearly identical, the taste is very similar, and the price is significantly lower. However, if there is sand or grit in your scallop, you know you’ve got the real thing. Rather than worry if I am eating undercover bovine tendon, I just buy the jumbo scallops and enjoy the mental image of a pack of black-market fish-mongers, wielding giant harpoons, chasing down a 5-ton cow with ankles the size of small tree trunks.

Note regarding the template: I am going to tweak it a bit. I want the background pattern to be larger, add some sort of taupe or beige border to the images…have you tried using it yet? Don’t feel like you have to, I mostly am fiddling with it to remember the layer stuff in Photoshop. Did you ask Max if we can upload video? Maybe I’ll just try one tonight…

    Galley Kitchen

Here is the long overdue kitchen shelf project. (Every time I look at these pictures, I am amazed not so much at what I have done with my kitchen, but more so with the fact that I can do anything at all in there.)

This is the BEFORE shot. And yes, this is my entire kitchen.

The shelf set I installed is from IKEA. I do not remember what series is was, but I think it was named something Swedish for “it should be illegal to call something a kitchen if it has no oven.”

There was actually a preliminary step between the BEFORE view and Step 1 that involved me using a hammer, a magnet, and my spidey sense to try to find the studs in the wall.

I also skipped one of the crucial intermediate steps: drink a whole pot of coffee and consider making another one…

    The Banner…in progress

Here is where I am with our custom banner.

Here is where I am with our custom banner. (Ignore that weird blue tinge, I think I bumped up the contrast without paying attention to the entire right side of the image. In the final version, you will not be riding into a blue haze, and the lines will be darker and easier to see.)

So here is the banner so far. I do not know anything about CSS, but my hope is that it is like a template, and there will be some sort of placeholder for our banner, so that, once the style sheet is in place, either one of us will be able to update the banner picture when needed, as long as we keep the same dimensions. Maybe if you haven’t had your appointment with Max yet, you can add this to the agenda?

Basically, I totally love all of this. I love it all. I say go ahead and do the GG bridge! i love cliche! I really like the idea of keeping it clean and simple with the nice pencil lines. I think the color on our blog should come from the photos we post. Then we don’t have to worry about it getting too busy. i mean, your drawings are lovely, they are exactly what I would have envisioned. I also love the idea of a banner gallery, how perfect! hey, maybe you could have my arm going above my head with my fingers all splayed out, that would be cool, and kind of weird. Thats how i wave in real life, all spastic like. not really. i don’t really wave like that.

Second test of the mini-project template

    Sock Curls

Well, here’s the second round of the 3-step project template. I think the size of the overall image, and the font in the text boxes are both about right – would you agree? I’ll email it to you right now as a psd file. The layers are named things like “Type here” and “drop image here” so hopefully it is not too complicated? You can call me and we can go through it together. Once you use it the first time, it’s really easy to just drop pictures in, flatten it, and then upload it!

Now that I’m looking at it, if I fix it so you can delete the Step One, Step Two, etc captions in each text box, this would be a great way to present a simple recipe and three pictures, too.

    • Carmen 1:17 am on August 2, 2009 Permalink

This is a really good idea – everything in the world can be explained in 3 easy steps. Step 1 = be born, Step 2 = live your life, Step 3 = die. Is that morbid? Ah, anyways, i really like this, can’t wait to use it tonight when i make a cocktail with three ingredients: 1 = alcohol, 2 = alcohol, 3 = love.

    • Emilily 10:24 am on August 2, 2009 Permalink

No, it’s not morbid, but I feel it’s worth noting that you really have no control over steps 1 and 3 in this case, so it doesn’t even make for that great of a project. As far as projects go, a recipe for oatmeal might be more interesting than the life of your average human being…

What kind of cocktail did you guys make?

Whoa! Your post just magically appeared while I was typing!

    Test of the new camera

So this is the new camera in action. I was testing how close it could focus, and how well it would capture shades of white, two things my last camera did not do very well at all.

(The background behind the flower is the pantone color booklet that Dylan just gave me. A numbered code for every single color in the world! Oh be still my beating heart.)

ooooooooh, niiiiice. I love that, what a good picture. I guess you picked a good camera! I like pantone color books too. If you like that, you’ll love this… http://kuler.adobe.com/#themes/rating?time=30

see, i’m having spacing issues too, how did you do these?

    • Emilily 12:54 am on August 2, 2009 Permalink

I did them all left-justify, and then tweaked the horizontal space between them. I think I started with 10px on either side, then bumped it up 10px each time until they were about even. I tried doing it by left justifying the left one, center justifying the middle one, and right justifying the right one, but it kept doing unexpected things, it just wasn’t doing what I thought it should. Conclusion: I think the vertical and horizontal space controls are good when posting multiple pictures, and the left, right and center justify controls are good when you are trying to wrap text.

    Links

Okay, there are two ways to do it. One, edit the html and add the “target” code, in this case, open the link in a new window is Target equals “_blank”. I used this method on the link from yesterday’s post to Garance’s blog, and it worked. I attempted to use it on the link I put to the Olay vs Creme de la Mer blog, and it did not work, because that link kept adding a rel equals “nofollow” tag, which I have no idea what that means, but I am guessing it has something to do with her particular blog settings forcing us to navigate away from our own page. Way to pee in our cornflakes, other blog lady.

The other way is probably easier. When you are posting, simply highlight the phrase you want to use as a link, and then the LINK button in the posting panel becomes active, and it brings up that dialogue box you mentioned, and then you can set the target to open in a new page, like this.

    Preview:

This was slide number 22 of 41.

I did a bit of image editing to try to make it look old. (It already looked old because the original picture was taken in 1998 with a camera that was made in 1972, so I decided to try and enhance the sort of gritty and deteriorated look rather than hide it.)

That was a LOT of scanning, but I am very happy with my new slide scanner. An unexpected bonus: all the tutorial videos are narrated in an incomprehensibley thick German accent, and you know how I feel about German engineering.

    Sunday Time

So…are we going to plan a project for this Sunday?

I just discovered something new! Check out what the Add More Tag did to the long chat post we added yesterday! (These new discoveries may not be as exciting to you, since you’ve been doing this for awhile, but I am having fun learning how to blog!)

    New way to post!

I copied the instant message content into Word, then did the find & Replace, and then posted it directly from Word, and it kept all the formatting! Awesome! All you do is,  instead of Save As, you Publish.  Pretty nifty feature.

    Template test

So I made a simple photoshop template to use for three-step projects. Not sure how much we would use it, but the benefits are 1) easy to drop images into and add three brief steps, 2) consistent look and 3) we only have one image added to our media file rather than three, using less of our storage space and delaying the day when we have to buy an upgrade. I’m still testing the appearance of the template, so this is a work in progress.

    This is the project template

Well, the first time it was too large, and now I think it is too small…have to find the optimum size, but my laptop battery is about to diiiieeeeee

    To be continued…

    What I’ve learned today…

This is what I’ve been reading about today, I thought you might be interested.

First! Wtf?! Babies can talk dog language!  At first I was wondering how this kind of research will benefit the human race but in the end I think its just an example of how our brains develop.  It would make sense that our brains would recognize tone differences before anything else.  http://bit.ly/1K0X9Z

Here is some more good brain stuff!  I can imagine in the future they will look back on this article the way we look back on 8 tracks.  New York Times brain article

And I learned this recipe which I will be making shortly.  I like the way this guy talks.
