    Art we should see

    Patrick Dougherty

    Patrick Dougherty

So I was looking at more nature art, Patrick Dougherty in this case, and decided I wanted one of these in my house. I mean, we could make that, right? They look so graceful and serene, and I imagine they smell like a perfect blend of fresh dirt and old paper.  I read an article here, and it mentioned some of his recent installations, one of which I had seen and didn’t know it: the redesign of the Max Azaria store on Melrose, which was right by Danny and Amy’s house. Anyways, there’s an installation of his in San Francisco that will be up until November 2009, so maybe we should check it out? It’s at the Joseph L Alioto Performing Arts Piazza – do you know where that is?

    Your learning for today…

So, I know how much you like to learn new stuff. And my endeavor in life is to make you super smart so…

In my reading today I’ve come across some good stuff. Did you know there is some crazy research being done these days on Cetaceans?

Also, apparently the Rorschach tests have been let out in the public and a bunch of people are up in arms about it. I think its pretty ridiculous, but I love Rorschach tests even though they are almost complete bullshit.  I think they are still accurate in telling if someone is super duper crazy rather than just a little crazy.

    I like this guy’s art.

And lastly, Mars! Astroids destroyed its magnetic flows man!

    Links

Okay, there are two ways to do it. One, edit the html and add the “target” code, in this case, open the link in a new window is Target equals “_blank”. I used this method on the link from yesterday’s post to Garance’s blog, and it worked. I attempted to use it on the link I put to the Olay vs Creme de la Mer blog, and it did not work, because that link kept adding a rel equals “nofollow” tag, which I have no idea what that means, but I am guessing it has something to do with her particular blog settings forcing us to navigate away from our own page. Way to pee in our cornflakes, other blog lady.

The other way is probably easier. When you are posting, simply highlight the phrase you want to use as a link, and then the LINK button in the posting panel becomes active, and it brings up that dialogue box you mentioned, and then you can set the target to open in a new page, like this.

Why do I like expensive things?

Even the packaging looks so 1992...

Even the packaging looks so 1992...

So. I’ve heard off and on about the famous Creme de la Mer, and how ridiculously expensive it was, and how all these starlet-types swear by it, but my feeling has always been, the newer the skincare technology, the better, right? I mean, this Creme de la Mer stuff has been around for quite awhile, and if it really possessed the miraculous anti-aging qualities it claims, then why would dermatologists continue to invent new creams and serums and tonics and whatnot? (Yes, I know the answer is: those other dermatologists are not interested in providing us with the ultimate skin cream, they just want to sell us more products.) Anyways, I found this article in Elle magazine that has nearly convinced me I really should cough up a month’s worth of grocery money for a little tub of the stuff, if only for a first-hand glimpse of the mystique surrounding this cult product.

    Giant Sea Kelp, or Macrocystis

    Giant Sea Kelp, or Macrocystis

Here’s the rundown. 40 years ago, aerospace physicist (ok, that title alone had me sold) Max Huber conceived of a seaweed-based formula for a salve to treat his rocket fuel burns. He selected the giant kelp because of its use in traditional Chinese and Native American medicines to cure a multitude of ailments, as well as the proven qualities of the sea minerals that the plant feeds on.  The final concoction took him 12 years and 6,000 experiments to perfect, and his exact specifications are still followed to the letter today. Twice a year, the Kwakiutl tribe (one of Vancouver’s oldest) sails out into the deep sea and harvests, by hand, only the tips of the seaweed macrocystis, which are then immediately put on ice and flown to a Long Island laboratory where they undergo a complex process of fermentation. Despite the skepticism of later cosmetic scientists attempting to reproduce the formula, the proper result can only be achieved when copper plates are placed inside the fermentation tanks that vibrate with a frequency replicating the gurgling sound of previous batches of seaweed, a phenomenon called sono-chemisty that Huber and other scientitsts of his generation were actively exploring. And all that can be yours for a mere $130 per ounce.

I really feel like I should get myself some.

    Preview:

This was slide number 22 of 41.

I did a bit of image editing to try to make it look old. (It already looked old because the original picture was taken in 1998 with a camera that was made in 1972, so I decided to try and enhance the sort of gritty and deteriorated look rather than hide it.)

    Rooftop meeting

    Rooftop meeting

That was a LOT of scanning, but I am very happy with my new slide scanner. An unexpected bonus: all the tutorial videos are narrated in an incomprehensibley thick German accent, and you know how I feel about German engineering.

So…are we going to plan a project for this Sunday?

I just discovered something new! Check out what the Add More Tag did to the long chat post we added yesterday! (These new discoveries may not be as exciting to you, since you’ve been doing this for awhile, but I am having fun learning how to blog!)

    I’m liking this article…

I love reading stories like this.  Its inspiring to see collaboration between real “makers” happen over a lunch and then just watch the ball start rolling and unfolding.  She does a wonderful job in writing about it – its like i was there for it.

    New way to post!

I copied the instant message content into Word, then did the find & Replace, and then posted it directly from Word, and it kept all the formatting! Awesome! All you do is,  instead of Save As, you Publish.  Pretty nifty feature.

So, you know how kdukes was talking about how much she loved L’Artisan Parfumeur’s Tubereuse? Well, i’m sure you do. Anyways, I looked it up and ordered a sample for $3 and it came in the mail today – holy crap. it smells so good. Its exactly what you were hoping to get when you put that oil in your hair or when you use the nars manoi flower stuff…except better. I got two samples, i’ll send you one.

    Template test

So I made a simple photoshop template to use for three-step projects. Not sure how much we would use it, but the benefits are 1) easy to drop images into and add three brief steps, 2) consistent look and 3) we only have one image added to our media file rather than three, using less of our storage space and delaying the day when we have to buy an upgrade. I’m still testing the appearance of the template, so this is a work in progress.

    This is the project template

    This is the project template

Well, the first time it was too large, and now I think it is too small…have to find the optimum size, but my laptop battery is about to diiiieeeeee

    To be continued…

    What I’ve learned today…

This is what I’ve been reading about today, I thought you might be interested.

First! Wtf?! Babies can talk dog language!  At first I was wondering how this kind of research will benefit the human race but in the end I think its just an example of how our brains develop.  It would make sense that our brains would recognize tone differences before anything else.  http://bit.ly/1K0X9Z

Here is some more good brain stuff!  I can imagine in the future they will look back on this article the way we look back on 8 tracks.  New York Times brain article

And I learned this recipe which I will be making shortly.  I like the way this guy talks.

    The Blog Project: day 6

Well, we’ve come a long way.

    Categories
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’ve been obsessively categorizing and re-categorizing, and I think I like where it is going – what about you? For our main categories, we have: MAKE (projects), SEE (movies, books, art, websites), TALK (general life stuff), EAT (yum yum) and WEAR (clothes, jeweltry, products, etc.) I chose those because they are 1) descriptive and 2) all the words have almost the same aesthetic weight – 3 to 4 letters, all caps – so their relative size as they appear in the Category Cloud is consistent. Within these categories, we have sub-categories, like within MAKE, we have categories for egg projects and sewing projects, and within the SEE category we have categories for art and movies. How does this work for you?

I also added a category under MAKE for The Blog Project :)

    Themes
I like this theme a lot, but I read that in order to have a custom banner, we had to use a CSS style sheet, and that was only compatible with certain themes, this not being one of them. Do you know anything about CSS? Perhaps Max does? I need to draw something for it first, but I was just wondering what we would do with it then. I also wonder if there is any way we could get our categories listed at the top, the way Kristopher Dukes does? It is a nice way to organize the site.

We’ve been trying to find the right kind of shelves that will fit in the firehouse and I think we have a winner.  Check out these shelves Max saw today in an architect’s office.  Aren’t they lovely?

    Is this an evil joke?

Apparently, this is the new (and completely incomprehensible) trend in denim: the high-rise skinny-slouchy jean.

    http://bit.ly/5JJcT

Because skinny jeans, with their short tapered leg and unforgiving skin-tight fit, were just too flattering, now they make it look like your crotch starts mid-thigh. And in case your legs don’t look troll-like enough, they come in a cropped length.

    Off to the the BBQ…

MyPicture …but before I go, some things to note:

    1. I am wearing a romper. An entire outfit made out of one item of clothing. I like the efficiency of it. But I also like the efficiency of my fanny pack, and that doesn’t mean it is in good taste. Either way, I’m giving it a shot.

    2. I put the Nars monoi oil in my hair. It smells tropical. It looks a tiny bit greasy. It makes me feel like I spent the night on a beach in Tahiti, so overall, a success.

    3. My new camera, which I do not yet know how to use but am madly in love with anyway, is a Leica D-Lux 3. I got a smashing deal, or as my friend Mia said, I used my energy to manifest it. Here’s the link to their website: http://en.leica-camera.com/photography/d_system/digilux_3/

    4. I dig this blog thing. Maybe I am just totally self-absorbed with us, but it is so much fun!

    5. Holy crap look how white my legs are.

I know you and I have some strong feelings about hats made out of straw, especially ones made by hand for two or three months and cost anywhere from $300 to $25,000, but after watching this piece that came out in the NY Times this morning I have to say – I truly dislike this trend. And now I ONLY like the ones that are hand made and cost tons of money.

I’m just not into – He’s just not that into you

Ok, I did another nice Saturday thing – I watched a movie at 5 in the afternoon. It took some rationalizing to get myself to watch it in the first place and now all i can do is curse the idea! Ugh. Why did i do it. Rather, why did I choose that particular movie to watch and subsequently waste 2 hours of my time. Goshdarnit!! For your future reference – do not watch “he’s not that into you”. And i hope i’m not too late. Ok, I know i’m a girl but chick movies are bullshit and they should all be shot in the face. This movie spent about the entire time showing me how insane chicks are because they get all obsessed about men and (by the way I was convinced chicks are crazy before i saw this movie!) and then in the end of course they end up happily in love and everything works out and the narrator, one of the crazy chicks, is explaining “see! even though we are crazy it still works out sometimes!” Its like one big backwards fucking joke.
